WHAT IS SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY

Social Security Disability consist of two programs both require you to have a disabling condition that is expected to be of a duration for at least twelve months.
1. SSI for those who have not worked or have not worked in the past few years but meet the medical requirement for disability. SSI is a means tested welfare program for the disabled.
Therefore to qualify for SSI you have to meet both the means test and the medical requirement. SSI has a variety of means tesing than just income and should thoroughly be understood before applying.
2. SSDI for those who have worked but can no longer work due to a disabling condition. To qualify for SSDI you need only meet the conditions for the medical requirement.
SSDI is the preferred program and should be used exclusively if you meet the requirements as SSI has many restrictive features and should only be applied for as your only option.
